Community, Responsibility, and Biodiversity: IUS Takes Part in Large-Scale Clean-Up Action

As part of IUS SDG Week 2026 and the marking of the International Day for Biological Diversity, a large-scale environmental clean-up action was successfully carried out on Friday, May 22, 2026, in the area of Novi Grad Sarajevo Municipality.

The initiative brought together a wide network of participants committed to environmental responsibility and community engagement. Particularly encouraging was the participation of 14 primary and secondary schools, alongside representatives of the IUS Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS). The event reflected the importance of involving young people, educational institutions, and the wider community in meaningful actions that promote sustainability and care for the environment.

Commenting on the event, Prof. Dr. Jasmin Šutković, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, expressed his gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the initiative. He particularly thanked the students, teachers, school principals, volunteers, and partners whose commitment demonstrated how strongly unity and social responsibility can contribute to building a cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful community.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Dr. Šutković emphasized the importance of continuous care for the environment, educating young people about biodiversity protection, and raising awareness that a clean environment directly contributes to a healthier society. His message highlighted the close connection between environmental action, public health, and long-term community well-being.

The clean-up action received important administrative and logistical support from the Ministry of Education of Canton Sarajevo and Minister Naida Hota-Muminović, as well as from Mr. Adnan Delić on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Policy. Their support added further strength to an initiative aimed at encouraging active citizenship and environmental awareness.

Special thanks were also extended to friends of the initiative and humanitarians Sabit Bekto and Amir Odobašić for their valuable support in the realization of all planned activities.

This successful action once again showed the power of collaboration between institutions, schools, volunteers, and community partners in addressing important environmental issues. It also reinforced the broader mission of IUS SDG Week 2026 to connect sustainability, education, and community action through meaningful initiatives.

Looking ahead, the organizers expressed their hope that this initiative will continue to grow in the coming years and become even larger and more impactful.
